AJAR welcomes Isist Atelier: Leather Masters from Barcelona

Ajar is proud to welcome Isist Atelier to our Melbourne showroom a design editor with its own leather craft workshop.

Founded in 1954 in Barcelona, it specialises in the production of both iconic and contemporary pieces using the highest quality leather. Isist are a champion of national design and its heritage, it both reissues historic editions and produces new designs. Among its designers are renowned figures such as Miguel Milá, Antoni Bonet, André Ricard, Antoni Arola, J.A. Coderch, and Jordi Vilanova.

 

 

Isist Atelier manufactures and distributes the only authorized version of the iconic BKF chair, holding the exclusive license from the family of Antoni Bonet, faithfully reproducing the definitive model under the name Bonet BKF®. With its low-slung leather seat resting across a light metal frame, the BKF chair is instantly recognisable. Sculptural yet relaxed, it’s a form that captivated the world from the very beginning. What defines an icon? Ubiquity, longevity, geometric clarity? The BKF chair checks every box.

 

 

Throughout the mid-20th century, the BKF chair became a symbol of postwar modernity.

It appeared in glossy magazines, movie sets, celebrity homes, advertisements and comic strips. But with success came replication. Unlicensed copies flooded the market, and for decades the chair’s authorship and authenticity were diluted by mass production and misattribution. Also in Barcelona, Isist Atelier acquired the rights to produce the BKF chair after a local manufacturer ceased operations in the 1990s. Determined to restore the chair’s integrity, the leather workshop partnered closely with the Bonet Estate to ensure every detail remained true to the original.
